Book Deng Xiaoping and the Transformation of China Review :

The author did a great job, really great job on this book.He has a deep understanding on China's rich history and how China gets where it is now. Mr. Deng is the right person for China, at the right (yet critical) moment. This book should be the "textbook" for any person who wants to know a little deeper about China.Deng's life represents the recent history of China. A poor student worked/studied in France in 1920s, being bullied and discriminated. A student in Soviet who saw the system may bring broken China back together. A high-ranking military commander who fought in battles to bring China to true independence in his 20s to 40s. A party leader turned exiler worked in a factory in his late 60s. A father who has to take care of a highly disabled adult son(was a bright student in a top university in China, and was threw out from a high floor window in Culture Revolution). A compromiser grabbed the absolute power in his 70s. A great reformer changed over 1.2 billion people's lives. A ruthless ruler doesn't allow his goal being sidetracked(1989 crackdown of street protesters). And finally, his goal, a stronger China, is here today.A great book.
I was blown away with how well written this was regarding the history of China. It talked about the Deng Xiaoping and his childhood and exposure to the communist party when he was studying abroad in France. The civil war where the communists won and drove the opposing party out of rule and the subsequent great leap forward, which took away land from the affluent class and the subsequent cultural revolution was lead to many people dying since people where put in charge of positions they were not knowledgable on. However, people's luck began to change as Deng Xiaoping rose to power. He started pulling different technologies from various countries and was a strong believer in education. He built up institutions that would have the greatest impact on the extraordinary growth China would have over the past few decades. There were other leaders like Zhu who were extremely popular with the Chinese public who did great things for the country and may have even been more popular than Mao just like Deng.It has many some time since I read this book so I do not remember all the details unfortunately but Deng Xiaoping throughout his journey had multiple setbacks where he was expelled from his positions under Mao and then eventually was able to make it back in power. Once Mao passed away he was freer to criticize his predecessor Mao and allowed him the freedom to institute greater changes to institutions with a great emphasis on education. Unfortunately for Deng, he did not end on a high note as a result of the Tiananmen Square massacre, where many students were protesting for greater freedoms. He had an opportunity to make the country more democratic but it did not come to tuition. However, Deng Xiaoping is without a doubt the reason China is so successful to this day and is responsible for lifting more people out of poverty than anyone else in the history of modern times.
